BIODEFENSE ANALYSIS AND COUNTERMEASURES
It is a recognized fact that, for the first time in U.S. history, this country faces potential terrorist threats to our information, economic, and physical infrastructure. Parsons supports the Department of Homeland Security’s and the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office’s mission to prevent these threats, reduce America’s vulnerability, minimize damage, and affect a complete recovery.
Response to a terrorist radiological, or biological threat involves vulnerability and risk assessment, and a planned response strategy. Parsons is at the forefront of planning for and responding to hazardous materials releases—everything from petrochemical spills to lethal nerve agent and biotoxins.
To protect against terrorism and defend against other disasters, we offer off-the-shelf technologies that are a product of more than 55 years of planning, designing and constructing secure facilities for the federal government.
Parsons optimizes security by developing cost-effective solutions driven by the lowest possible risk, such as the program we are supporting to design an integrated network of sensing and reporting systems to detect nuclear and radiological materials. We are also supporting removal, treatment and packaging of radioactive spent nuclear fuel sludge. A large number of the equipment components are manufactured at Parsons fabrication facility and are specially designed for remote operation capable of detecting, monitoring, and shielding a wide variety of radioactive ingredients. In addition, we are designing, constructing, and will operate, a salt waste processing facility to handle highly radioactive materials containing Cs-137, actinides, strontium, and other isotopes.
We provide OSHA- and EPA-approved methodologies for handling and remediating biological hazardous waste. Services include:
- Threat and vulnerability assessments
- Biologic hazards investigations
- Human and facility impact investigations
- Mitigation and remediation procedures
- Crisis communication
In the event of a release, our experts provide immediate on-call services to:
- Assess the impact of the release
- Assist in the emergency cleanup
- Coordinate with local authorities and regulators
