Project Description

Since 1966, Parsons has served as General Engineering Consultant for the 103-mile, $9.7 billion rail rapid transit system serving Washington, D.C., and suburbs. Facilities include 84 stations and intermodal transfer terminals; commuter car parks for 30,000 autos; and 48 miles of subway, including 22 miles of cut-and-cover tunnel, 11 miles of earth tunnel, and 15 miles of rock tunnel.

Parsons' role has included:

  • preliminary engineering design of the entire system;
  • planning;
  • route location;
  • property requirements;
  • budget estimates;
  • right-of-way design criteria;
  • preliminary and final right-of-way plans;
  • surveying;
  • property maps;
  • overall design criteria;
  • design standards; and,
  • and specifications.

In addition, Parsons managed the design of:

  • aerial, at-grade, and subway structures;
  • trackwork;
  • traction power;
  • train control and communications;
  • yards and shops;
  • system safety evaluation;
  • noise and vibration control;
  • and maintenance procedures.

Parsons also provided:

  • scheduling by network analysis and funding;
  • cost estimating;
  • management of consultants' final designs;
  • utility relocations and approvals;
  • community coordination and information dissemination;
  • funding forecasts;
  • coordination with local environmental jurisdictions;
  • and permits and coordination with state, county, and city agencies.

Parsons, in close association with WMATA personnel, also develops criteria and coordinates ongoing design for the Washington Metrorail Automatic Train Control system which includes a dual computer-based operations control center and vital control equipment installed throughout the transit system to provide automatic train protection, automatic train operations, and automatic train supervision.

1997-Washington Building Congress Craftsmanship Award in recognition of outstanding work, Traction Power Equipment Installation SS1-12

1991-Engineering Achievement Award presented by the American Society of Civil Engineers for the Metrorail Green Line, Waterfront to Anacostia

1988-APTA Outstanding Achievement Award presented to WMATA for excellence in planning, construction, safety, operation, and maintenance

1988-Excellence in Concrete Award for the creative use of concrete, presented to Parsons by the Maryland Chapter of the American Concrete Institute

1979-Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award presented by the American Society of Civil Engineers

1977-Award for Excellence in Design Using Precast Concrete presented by PCI to Parsons for the DuPont Circle Metro Station
