PASADENA, CA (January 2, 2018) – Parsons has been selected by the Indiana Department of Transportation to design a new, wider bridge to replace the SR 249 bridge, which crosses over U.S. 12 and two railroads in Portage, IN. This design-bid-build project is a priority because the existing bridge carries more than 10,000 vehicles per day—40% of this traffic is freight-carrying semi-trucks—and is the only major entrance to the Port of Indiana, one of the busiest ports in the Midwest and the state’s only deep-water port that receives ships carrying cargo to and from international destinations.
“At Parsons, we have expertise in both bridge design and strategic maintenance of traffic during construction and we look forward to applying our expertise on this important project, which will improve motorist and bridge inspection crew safety,” said Mike Johnson, Parsons Group President.
Parsons’ services will include bridge, roadway, and maintenance of traffic design as well as National Environmental Policy Act studies and documentation, a topographic survey, geotechnical investigations, right of way acquisition, public outreach, and utility coordination. The new 10-span structure will be 1,030 ft long.
